The Star Gold Coast will early next year host a brand-new tournament series concept for Australian shores in which all 28 events feature a shot clock.
The QLD Shot Clock Super Stacks will run for 12 days from 13 to 24 February, with buy-ins ranging from $350 to $2,000. Star has described the series as not only a first for Australia but also for the entire Asia-Pacific region, with the introduction of a shot clock in all events complemented by larger than usual starting stacks.
“The Star Poker is proud to present this new series, designed with the player experience in mind,” said Martin Coughlan, Group Poker Strategy Manager for Star Entertainment Group.
“Featuring shot clocks across all events and generous starting stacks, this structure offers the ideal balance for competitive play and an unforgettable tournament atmosphere.”

The question of whether shot clocks should be used more widely was a hot topic at this year’s WSOP in Las Vegas after multiple players were accused of unnecessary tanking, including controversial British identity Will Kassouf who was eventually banned from the latter stages of the series for his antics.
Australia’s Adrian Attenborough also famously tanked for almost 20 minutes in one hand when heads-up for the 2022 WSOP Main Event crown.
The QLD Shot Clock Super Stacks series will feature a variety of different shot clock structures with bigger buy-in events such as the $2k Supreme Pro Challenge and the $1,500 Main Event boasting 30-second shot clocks but lower buy-ins reduced to 20 seconds. All 28 events will include a limited number of time banks for each player although satellites will feature shorter 15-second shot clocks and no time banks.
