One of Australia’s most accomplished players has added another notch to the belt – and a trophy to the cabinet – after taking down the WPT Australia Championship at The Star Gold Coast.
Cementing his maiden WPT main tour title to go with his two WSOP bracelets, the Adelaide native made relatively light work of a tough final table on Wednesday, coming into the day’s play with a strong chip lead and never relinquishing it as he stormed home to claim the $585,359 top prize.
Fittingly, while the final table of six lasted for a little over four hours, the heads-up battle against West Australia’s Travis Endersby was short lived.
Endersby, nursing a short-stack, 3-bet all-in pre-flop holding K♦J♦ and was quickly called by Obst with A♠K♣. The board ran out Q♥10♥7♠5♠K♥ as Obst survived a sweat to lock up victory.
Obst may be known as a mixed game specialist but it’s clear his Hold’em game is pretty damn decent too, having outlasted the 398-man field to win his first main event title on home soil.
FINAL TABLE PAYOUTS:
| Position | Player | Prize |
| 1 | James Obst | $585,359 |
| 2 | Travis Endersby | $389,478 |
| 3 | Daniel Murphy | $295,669 |
