Thai-rrific! Thailand’s Kannapong “Tent” Thanarattrakul setting up camp at WPT Prime Gold Coast

Hailing from the beautiful sun kissed country of Thailand, Kannapong Thanarattrakul has crossed the seas to join the field here at The Star Gold Coast for the WPT Prime Championship.

Known as “Tent” or “KT” to his mates, Thanarattrakul has been travelling the world playing poker since 2018 and in the last two years has celebrated some milestone successes.

His breakthrough result come via an online win in 2022 where he placed second in the $5,000 WSOP Online Main Event. Taking home a massive US$2,094,885 cash prize, the impressive score put him on the map as one to watch and propelled him to second place (behind Punnat Punsri) on Thailand’s all-time money list with what is now more than US$3 million in winnings.

Thanarattrakul has since won an EPT Prague High Roller Event for US$577,775 in December 2022 and ran second in the WSOP-C London Main Event for US$388,630 in August 2023, with many a cash in-between.

So what brings this Thai-phoon to Australia?

“I met Yita Choong and Josh McCully in Asia and Josh invited me to come to Australia,” he told PMA. “If I compare the beaches with some in Thailand, the Gold Coast is better.”

Thanarattrakul also brings with him a contingent of supporters and local media, who have been busy filming his every move. Asked if this attention is at all distracting, he replies, “Having so many media and supporters with me doesn’t change the way that I play. I still play the same. My biggest hands have been pocket Jacks and pocket 9s, but I’ve been playing consistently with small wins here and there. I like poker because you can win even when you don’t have anything. You can bluff, you have to use your brain and math and mental [skills]. I am looking for opportunities and different tells.”

While he is headed to Jeju for the Asian Poker Tour event after this event and dreams of winning a bracelet at the WSOP in Las Vegas later this year, away from the felt Thanarattrakul continues to create online content through his YouTube channel and Twitch, while he also enjoys spending time at home with his cat.

But a trophy here on the Gold Coast wouldn’t go astray. He is currently sitting pretty early on Day 2 of the WPT Prime Gold Coast main event, in the money with a healthy chip stack and eyeing yet another deep run.
