Uno Uka coolers into chip lead on last hand of Day 1D; 2023 WSOP-C Gold Coast Main Event

The final Day 1 flight of the 2023 WSOP-C Gold Coast Main Event has reached a conclusion, attracting 213 entries to take the final numbers for the event over the 500-entry mark.

Uno Uka has bagged the chip lead, with 454,500, in part courtesy of a last hand blind-versus-blind, Kings-versus-Jacks confrontation at the expense of Eko Xu.

Others to bag big included JP Rounce-Sue (354,000), Haozhe Gan (323,500), and Craig Rimmer (308,500). Canadian expat Mike Maddocks found a bag of 209,500, and also sat down for a ‘vox pop’ chat with PMA‘s Alison Lee Rubie; available to see on our Facebook page.

Uno Uka is perhaps most known for winning the APT Nationals Main Event in Sydney in October this year for $78,000, his biggest result to date. The Sydneysider is a regular at Kings Poker in Kogarah; after APT Nationals, Uka picked up two victories at the Sydney Millions.

Speaking to PMA post-flight, Uka said he felt amazing having bagged such a big stack, and that his thought process throughout the day was just to take each hand as it comes; “I didn’t think much about the end of the day as we were playing, the main thing is to make no mistakes, to play my game.”

In terms of Day 2, Uka is determined that his strategy given his stack advantage will “depend on the table and the other stacks, have to be very aware as to who’s there and what I can do”. He also hopes it will be far easier to navigate Day 2 here than it was at the APT Nationals Main Event, where he bagged an ‘average’ stack.

In terms of the WSOP-C Main Event as a whole, the overall chiplead still belongs to Iran’s Kamyar Ekrami, who bagged 497,000 on Wednesday thanks largely to a massive set-under-set cooler in the final levels of the day against Rhys Kelly.
