France’s Romain Morvan will take the chip lead into today’s final table of the WPT Australia Main Event following a long and eventful afternoon of action at The Star Gold Coast on Tuesday.

What started the day as a field of 24 players was quickly whittled down to an unofficial table of nine, but with stacks deep and hefty pay jumps kicking in, play slowed dramatically into the evening with 7-handed play lasting almost five hours.

In the end it took an epic cooler to set the official final table of six when Gary Lin’s 99 was enough to felt Yuto Suzuki, who held 22 on a 8932J board. Set over set was enough end the day, with Morvan taking the biggest stack into Day 5 ahead of WSOP bracelet winner Martin Kozlov and Adelaide’s Gary Lin.

Sydney’s Ken Demlakian is the short-stack but still has 20 big blinds to play with and will be confident of making his presence felt given a number of deep runs in large-field events in recent times, including a runner-up finish in the Wynn Summer Classic in Las Vegas in June for US$223,185 (AU$348,890).

Morvan, meanwhile, is coming off victory in the APL Million $5k High Roller last month for an AU$202,545 score.

Morvan told PMA before bagging on Tuesday that he was “taking it step by step” and was very happy to be seeing a result so soon after that impressive result.

The remaining 6 players will return today from 11:30am to play down to a winner. The Final Table will be streamed on the World Poker Tour website, brought to you by Sharehand, with commentary from Tony Dunstand Jamie Kerstetter
