It’s been a long time coming, but the World Poker Tour is set to finally host its first ever Australian main tour stop when WPT Australia kicks off at The Star Gold Coast this week.
In the same year the WPT celebrates its 20th Anniversary, WPT Australia will kick off on Thursday with the $1,350 Mystery Bounty launching a busy 13-event schedule that will culminate in the $5,400 WPT Australia Main Event, running from Friday 23 to Tuesday 27 September.
PokerMedia Australia will boast a strong presence at The Star Gold Coast with our live reporting team providing coverage of eight side events, including the Mystery Bounty, the $20,000 Super High Roller and the $10,000 High Roller. We will also provide Day 2 coverage of the $2,500 8-Max, the $550 Action Clock, $550 PLO, $660 Big Bounty and Mini Main Event Day 2.
Players are advised to be aware of recent changes to the regulatory environment in Queensland which prevents The Star Gold Coast from accepting online registrations for tournaments.
As per a recent advisory, tournament entries can now only be purchased at the poker desk via cash or gaming chips, or by fund transfer to the cashier in advance can then be accessed at any time throughout the series.
Star said it hopes to have an EFTPOS terminal available in time for the series for processing debit cards, however credit cards will not be accepted.
The inaugural WPT Australia comes off the back of a hugely successful WPT prime event at The Star Gold Coast in June, where Yang Lei defeated a Main Event field of 896 starters to claim the $216,763 first prize and entry into the WPT World Championship at Wynn Las Vegas in December.
The winner of the WPT Australia Main Event will also win a seat at the WPT World Championship, plus flights and accommodation courtesy of the WPT. A US$5,000 Main Tour passport is also on offer for the Player of the Festival, while a number of satellites to win a $20k WPT World Championship package are on offer. These include a 2 Step Satellite with Step 1 entry at just $140, while direct qualifiers will include a $550 option and a $2,600 option – both with unlimited re-entries.
