Qi Xu has broken through for his first major Australian poker victory, defeating 2022 WSOP Millionaire Maker fourth-place finisher Yita Choong heads-up in The Star Sydney Champs Main Event.
The Queensland accountant, who has been playing poker for almost 13 years, defeated a field of 1,277 entries for a top prize of $382,973, plus a $15,000 package into the WPT World Championship at The Wynn Las Vegas in December.
Having only hit the felt again late last year after focusing on looking after his wife and young child at home, there was no stopping Xu today, as he revealed to PokerMedia Australia that he was up and about well before the start of Day 3.
“I’ve always been good with numbers,” Xu said, “and I was up from 6am to 10am working through the company payroll before playing today. It was a real grind, but I am so happy to have won today!”
The final day of the $2,000 buy-in tournament – which garnered almost $2.3 million in total prize money – also saw WPT Prime Gold Coast Champion Gavin Best record another deep run, finishing in sixth place, while Yu Chen and her partner Jun Wang cashed out for a total of $60,904, setting them up for the imminent arrival of their first child together.
