An instance of ill-timed misfortune has turned into a stroke of luck for Russell Fogarty with the Queenslander winning the APLPT Adelaide Main Event on Sunday.
Originally planning to fly to Las Vegas last week for the World Series of Poker, a leg infection saw Fogarty’s international travel plans scuttled – so he turned his eyes to Adelaide instead. Flying down on a whim after being given the all-clear by doctors, the popular Aussie poker scene regular turned his $175 Main Event buy-in into an impressive $16,410 payday (after a 4-way deal) by outlasting a field of 877 to claim the title. He also scores a $1,500 ticket into the APL Million Main Event, set to take place in his hometown at Southport Sharks in August.
“I’m just so happy to have that monkey off my back, so to speak,” said Fogarty, who has produced a number of deep runs over the past 12 months without sealing a major trophy.
“I’m ecstatic really. I was so disappointed I couldn’t go to Vegas and this just makes it all worth it. It feels really good, amazing.”
Fogarty’s victory capped a hugely successful week for the APL in the City of Churches, with numbers smashing those seen during last year’s COVID-impacted series. The 877 Main Event entries comfortable topped the 786 in 2021, the Jackstar Super High Roller attracted 122 starters compared with 68 in 2021 while the $2,500 Centurion saw 25 players hit the felt in its first ever Adelaide appearance.
In total, APLPT Adelaide attracted 3,117 series entries to generate a prize pool of $623,040 – comfortably exceeding the $500,000 guarantee.
In other notable results, Jacob Lock took down the Jackstar for $35,560, holding off the challenge of in-form runner-up Gavin Best, while popular local Jerry Zhang the $450 Mini HR for $8,220.
