China’s Wenjie Sun has proved that experience doesn’t always count after taking down the Opening Event at the Star Gold Coast Champs on Sunday.
Wenjie, who picked up a hefty $49,611 after defeating France’s Anthony Cierco heads-up for the title, only took up poker less than six months ago, being coached by his best mate as they put in countless hours of study to prepare for this series. It has clearly paid off in every sense of the word.
Incredibly, Wenjie had been down to as little as 20,000 in chips – below starting stack – shortly before the final table was set but stormed back to complete a memorable victory.
He ultimately topped a field of 346 starters that included some of Australia’s most accomplished players, including Mike Maddocks, Ricky Kroesen, Hussein Hassan, Najeem Ajez and many more.
The PMA Live Reporting Crew will be taking a day off on Monday to play in the Teams Event but will return to bring you all the live action from Day 1 of the $660 Big Wave on Tuesday.
