World Poker Tour to host three events in Australia in 2022

The World Poker Tour has announced that it will host three separate events in Australia in 2022, including the country’s first even main tour stop, after inking a deal with Star Entertainment Group.

Although exact dates for the two newest additions to the calendar are yet to be released, both will be held at The Star Gold Coast later this year.

The other, announced in January, is WPTDeepStacks Sydney – the first ever WPT event to be held in the harbour city and scheduled to take place from 30 March to 11 April 2022. According to the WPT, side events in Sydney will include a $750 buy-in Opening Event, a two-day $2,000 event and The Star Sydney’s popular $5k Challenge. The $1,500 Main Event will run from 7 to 11 April.

“Poker players in Australia have always been passionate about the game and the partnership with The Star Entertainment Group allows us to expand our presence there,” said WPT CEO Adam Pliska.

“Hosting the first WPT event at The Star Sydney puts us front and center in the largest poker market in Australia, one of the most iconic cities of the world, adding another element to our 20th anniversary celebration.”

Full details of the two Star Gold Coast events, which will comprise Australia’s first ever WPT main tour stop and, presumably, the return of WPTDeepStacks, are set to be announced once regulatory approval is confirmed.

“I could not be more excited to be bringing a Main Tour stop to my home country,” said Angelica Hael, WPT VP of Global Tour Management.

“I look forward to greeting every single one of my fellow Aussies at the event and welcoming the world to an amazing host property, The Star.”
