It’s been slow going on the local poker scene given lockdowns in NSW and Victoria and the cancellation of multiple tournament series up and down the east coast, but internationally poker is well and truly back.
One of the biggest story lines from the live felt in recent months has been that of Phil Hellmuth, the 15-time WSOP bracelet winner and self-prescribed greatest player in the world.
Hellmuth has certainly had plenty of ammunition to back up that claim after winning seven consecutive matches in PokerGO’s High Stakes Duel heads-up series, including three straight wins over Antonio Esfandiari, three more over Daniel Negreanu and another one-off victory against sports talk show host Nick Wright.
However, that run finally came to an end this week with Tom Dawn conquering Hellmuth after a see-sawing five-and-a-half-hour battle.
The final hand saw Dwan crack Hellmuth’s Aces holding 93 to pocket a cool US$200,000.
