Sydney Champs postponed on COVID-19 uncertainty

Star Poker has announced that the 2021 Sydney Champs has been postponed as a result of the latest COVID-19 outbreak in Sydney.

Scheduled to take place from 21 July until 2 August, the Sydney Champs was to be The Star Sydney’s first tournament series since the global COVID-19 pandemic reached Australian shores in March 2020.

Instead, the two-week closure announced by The Star Sydney last week and uncertainty around when and how the property will be able to open again made planning the return of the Sydney Champs untenable.

In a statement sent to PokerMedia Australia, Star Poker said, “Due to the ongoing COVID-19 situation affecting Greater Sydney, The Star Sydney would like to take this opportunity to advise our poker community that the 2021 Sydney Champs tournament, scheduled to start 21 July 2021, has been temporarily postponed.

“The health and safety of our guests and team members is The Star’s number one priority and we will continue to follow directions from the NSW Government and health authorities to ensure their wellbeing.

“The Star will contact all entrants directly to advise of rescheduling, or to refund buy-ins. We understand players’ disappointment but look forward to welcoming you back and relaunching the Sydney Champs tournament in the near future when it is safe to do so.”

PMA understands that Star Poker is hoping to run the event this year.

As previously reported by PMA, the Sydney Champs was to comprise nine events over 13 days, highlighted by the $3,000 buy-in Main Event.
