Sydney local Steven Zhou has scored the biggest win of his career after outlasting a mammoth field of 1,124 players to win the 2019 WSOP Circuit Sydney Main Event at The Star.
One of the two dominant chip stacks heading into Monday’s final table, Zhou endured a swingy road to victory – briefly taking an early chip lead on the last day before losing more than half his stack to tumble down the leaderboard.
But after eliminating another Star Poker regular and 2019 APL Millions champion Huss Hussan in seventh, then scoring a lucky double thanks to a turned flush against overnight chip leader Edwin Chiu when both players held KJ, Zhou didn’t look back as he rapidly soared back towards the top of the chip counts.
In the end he was one of four players to walk away with a smile after the remaining players made a four-way ICM deal and although his AU$260,904 prize wasn’t the biggest payday, Zhou did walk away with trophy after a lightning fast heads-up battle with runner-up Lior Segre.
Zhou’s victory saw him just about double his previous career winnings of AU$160,000 and far exceeded his previous best score – an AU$55,365 payday for finishing third in a WSOP APAC 6-Max event in 2014.
It also sees him join Alex Lynskey, Michael Kanaan and Joel Dodds as a WSOP Circuit Sydney Main Event champion.
