An excited and relieved Sam Dessaix-Porter from Wollongong has won the recent 2018 APL Million Main Event. The tournament series held at The Star in Sydney from March 3, culminated in a final table on March 12, and the crowning of the champion. The Australian Poker League (APL) and 888 Poker League’s (888PL) marquee tournament of the year, The APL Million guarantees at least $1 Million in cash to be won.

Dessaix-Porter’s impressive victory saw him overcome 1,040 other qualifiers to score $247,500 in cash and an $8,000 package to compete at the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas. 108 other satisfied players minimum cashed for at least $2,250 each.

The tournament, in it’s second year, was another great success and saw a number of Australia’s poker professionals compete, including Jackie Glazier, Heidi May, Federico Butteroni, and online poker superstar, Jesse “On the Mac” McKenzie hitting the felt to have a crack at the huge prize pool.

But it was Dessaix-Porter who would edge out Ben Veale of Western Australia after a marathon final table which took over nine hours and almost three hundred hands to crown the winner. Interestingly, Dessaix-Porter is the second Illawarra player to win the illustrious tournament after Branko Usljebrka, also of Wollongong, won the inaugural event last year.

A regular player with the APL, Dessaix-Porter’s preferred local venue is the Illawarra Master Builders Club. He now plans to take a few days off before returning to his studies and preparing for his Las Vegas trip in June where he’ll face many of the best players in the world.
