Celebrating its ninth anniversary, this year’s Sydney Championships has been extended by a full week, with the revamped 21-day schedule kicking off on Tuesday 18 July and running through until Monday 7 August.
The series will welcome three brand new events, including a $330 buy-in Masters Event for players aged 50 and above, a $1,100 Monster Stack which will see players start with $50,000 in chips and one of the schedule’s headlining events – a $20,000 High Roller.
Other highlights include the $5,000 Challenge with a $500,000 prize pool guarantee, the $1,100 6-max with a $100,000 guarantee and the popular $330 Opening Event with a $400,000 guarantee. The $3,000 Main Event begins on Friday 4 August and comes with a huge $1 million guarantee!
In total, the 2017 Sydney Championships boasts a combined $2 million in guaranteed prize money – up from $1.25 million last year.
“We’re very proud to continue our long-term goal of growing Poker at The Star, to offer players from all over the globe a world class tournament series in Sydney’s only fully integrated gaming resort,” said Chief Operating Officer, Gaming at The Star, Damian Quayle.
“For the first time we’ll truly cater to poker’s High Rollers market with the new $20,000 event while at the same time offering a range of tournaments to suit every budget. The Sydney Championships has become one of the most popular tournament series for players in the region and we look forward to building on that success.”
The Sydney Championships was first held in 2009, with the inaugural Main Event won by future World Series of Poker bracelet winner Jarred Graham. Other winners have included Andrew Capelin, Errolyn Strang, Dean Yuen, Daniel Laidlaw, Martin Kozlov, Ben Jee and Kahle Burns.
This year will be the first time the Sydney Championships have been held in The Star’s recently refurbished, world class Star Poker room which boasts 40 tables and can seat 400 players at a time.
