The 2014 Star Poker Summer Series began with a bang last night with a strong showing for the Opening Event $330 NLH Day 1 Flight 1. 286 players filled the Star Poker room for the event, made up of 250 seated entrants and 36 alternates. By the end of twelve 40-minute levels of play, 36 players remained to qualify for Day 2.
Historically the $330 NLH opening event entrant numbers at both the Summer Series and the Sydney Champs approach sell-out. With table caps and room structure, it’s been a challenge for organisers to fulfil the demand for this popular event. However, Star Poker management were able to provide for 25 more alternates than the Sydney Champs event that was held in August earlier this year.
Expectations are high for sell-outs in the remaining two flights. Along with the repechage format for flights two and three, organisers are hopeful to go well beyond the 825-entrant mark to push for a prize pool of over $250,000. The winner will then be expected to take home around $60,000.
Two more flights remain in the Opening Event. Flight 2 will begin at 6.15pm tonight. Flight 3 will commence on Friday November 28 at 12.30pm. Those that qualify from the three Day 1 flights will earn a place in the starting list for Day 2 that will begin on Saturday November 29 at 12.30pm. Play is expected to continue on Day 2 until a final table is reached. Those players who make the final table will return on Sunday November 30 to compete for the crown.
Of the 286 runners that started Day 1 Flight 1, 36 players remain after 12 levels of play and a starting stack of 10,000 in chips. The top 5 from this flight were:
Peter McCarthy – 201,800
Matt Rolfe – 170,100
Ahmed Abdellatif – 150,300
Leon Benivento – 137,900
Ross Killiby – 133,900
