Newcastle’s Nicholas Lamprianidis (pictured) has taken out the 2014 edition of The Star Showdown. A valiant Lerrina Heinrich fought hard to get to the final table and finished a deserving runner up.

The Showdown event began on Wednesday October 9, when the first Day 1 flight hit the felt with 134 runners. By the end of play 49 players had survived. Day 1B took place on Thursday evening with 169 players taking to the tables, 73 dodging the cull. The final Day 1 flight stormed The Star Poker Room Friday afternoon with 169 runners. 69 players survived, seeing 191 hopefuls return for Day 2.

The Day 2 players did not expect the field to drop as fast as it did! The field was halved in the first 2.5 hours of play. Shortly after, the Rock Lily bar begun to fill with poker players from around the state converging on The Star for the $5000 Freeroll and the National Chip Stacking competition. Congratulations to Daryl Bennett from South Australia who was crowned the National Chip Stacking Championship champion.

At about 5pm, play ceased for Day 2 with 48 players reaching the money. All 48 players were paid out $1200 as their minimum payout to enjoy the fantastic facilities that The Star had to offer. Not long after, registration began for the $5000 FREEROLL – 472 players converged on the Poker Room to get registered. The unexpected attendance saw approximately 200 reserves seated into the event in which the eventual winner, Nima Zarei, scored a $2000 Star Summer Series Main Event seat.

48 contenders returned for Day 3 at 12pm on Sunday with the satisfaction that they had hit the cash and were guaranteed a piece of the prizepool. Play continued until Nicholas Lamprianidis triumphed, taking home the trophy and a cool $50,000.
