Jason Quarmby has outlasted a field of 825 entries in the Opening Event NLH repechage ($330) of the 2014 Sydney Championships at The Star.
Leading into the final table Tam Truong had a significant chip lead with over 2.2m in chips with his nearest rival Greg Cook starting with well back with 1.45m. Quarmby was also holding more than a million in chips with 1.12m and there were several short stacks at or below 500k.
The first bust of the final table came as the experienced Martin Comer hit the rail. Short stacks Alex Lam and Collin Tran were able to hold out for decent paydays but fell in eighth and seventh place respectively.
With five players remaining Quarmby had taken over the chip lead from Truong and had done it aggressively to build a significant lead of 3.3m in chips compared to the following pack of Cook with 1.9m and Tam Truong now down to 1.3m. Jason Sarkis and Danny Ayoub were further back and would be looking for places to pounce to hopefully double up to stay alive.
Fan favourite Ayoub was able to nurse his short stack to outlast Adam Schmidt, Sarkis and Cook to finish in a respectable third place for almost $19,000.
When play reached head’s up Truong had built his stack to now narrowly follow Quarmby as play continued amongst a solid rail of fans. In the final hand, Quarmby’s kings eventually held up against Tam Truong’s AK. There was a scare on the turn though when Truong turned a flush draw but it wasn’t to be and Quarmby was crowned champion. For Truong, his second place was well-deserved and he received a payday of $36,506.
Final table results were as follows:
1st Jason Quarmby – $57,915
