STAR POKER: Minagar the man to catch heading into penultimate day

It’s fair to think that the 43 players remaining in the battle for the first Star Poker Summer Series Main Event title to be offered in conjunction with the National Poker League (NPL) and Asian Poker Tour (APT) had a solid night’s sleep. A staggering line-up of 357 players took their seats in the Star Poker tournament area for day two and it took 12 hours to slash that tally to the final 43. The bubble burst shortly before midnight confirming the 63 players who would earn a slice of the $1.17 million prizepool.

Leading the way is little-known Amir Minagar who went on a late heater to finish with a monster stack of 1,318,000. The top five stacks belong to Minagar (1,318,000), Michael Malki (1,086,000), Alex Antonios (1,022,000), Tristan Bain (902,000) and Tony Kambouroglou (829,000). The key hand for Minagar came with about 90 minutes remaining when he got it all-in with A-K against an opponent’s K-K and watched not one but two Aces land on the board. Minagar’s previous best cash was for 20th in the 2010 Aussie Millions Main Event but he’s positioned for a lot more here.

Minagar is one of three players sitting above a million along with Malki and Antonios who are also well placed for a run at the final table today (Sunday) and a shot at the first prize of $281,685. Although a lot of big names fell by the wayside on day two, a number of notables remain including 2009 APPT Sydney champion Jonathan Karamalikis, Jim Collopy, Tristan Bain, Tony Kambouroglou, Errolyn Strang, Sheldon Mayer and Sam Capra. Play will resume at 2pm as we look to play down to the final table.
