CROWN POKER: End of an era as Melbourne Champs joins ANZPT

This week’s tournament series at Crown Poker marks the end of an era with the iconic Melbourne Poker Champs rebranded as part of the Australia New Zealand Poker Tour.

With respect to the Crown Poker website, the first edition of the Melbourne Poker Champs were actually held way back in 2002 – not 2005 – where a modest field of 66 players took their seats in the $300 buy-in No Limit Hold’em Main Event. David Szetho collected the modest first prize of $6930.

Fast-forward a decade to 2012 when the Melbourne Champs Main Event would attract more than 430 players who generated a prizepool of $433,000. In a first for Aussie poker, Jackie Glazier became the second female player to capture a major title when she captured the first prize worth almost $100,000. Back in 2004, Stella Coe won the Melbourne Champs title.

Several events have already been run and won (results below), while the first ANZPT Melbourne Repechage event is scheduled to kick-off on Thursday night. A prizepool of $750,000 has been guaranteed for this $1100 buy-in tournament.
