STAR POKER: Ryan harnesses luck of the Irish to win Opening Event

A huge St Patrick’s Day at Star Poker ended with an Irish-born player taking out the ANZPT Sydney Opening Event title and the final table decided in the PMA NLHE Special Event.

With a huge rail following the action in the Opening Event, Evan Ryan outpointed Dien Duy Nguyen to pocket the $60,065 first prize. Nizar Nakhle was third while final table chip leader Trudie Sultana finished fourth. The Opening Event was another massive success, generating a field of 863 players and a prizepool of more than $250,000.

Meanwhile the fourth edition of the $1100 buy-in PMA Special Event drew the biggest field yet (91) including Star Poker ambassadors including the likes of Grant Levy and Aaron Benton, IveyPoker’s Jackie Glazier, Dale Marsland, Michael Kanaan, Didier Guerin, Dean Yuen, Tony Kambouroglou, Jackson Zheng and Errolyn Strang.

Most would fall through the day with Glazier among the first to go after twice running sets into straights, however Strang and Guerin survived and head into day two with Guerin the clear chip leader after a huge final 30 minutes. He returns with almost double his nearest rival with 321,600.

Also making it through to a particularly strong final table are James Tai, Thang Truong and Milan Gurung. One man who won’t sleep too well is Iori Yogo who bubbled after a huge clash with Didier Guerin.

It was the second time in 10 minutes that Guerin had got the better of Yogo in a button versus big blind confrontation so when Guerin again raised from the blinds, Yogo shipped it in with A-J. But Guerin was quick to call, tabling a dominant A-Q, and when the board ran out K-9-6-4-4, final 10 were decided and all assured a slice of the $91,000 prizepool.
