The MAIN EVENT title is again heading to NSW after Amjed Slewa’s victory at Crown Melbourne yesterday. The Sydney South West player (pictured left) prevailed after a marathon heads-up battle with South Australia’s Andrew Dales.
Slewa earned a first prize package of $100,000, which included more than $80,000 in cash along with seats into the 2014 Aussie Millions Main Event and MAIN EVENT IV, to be played later this year. He plans to spend his winnings on a holiday and a deposit for a house.
Dales and Slewa swapped the chip lead back and forth for more than an hour with both players seeing many cheap flops and carefully picking their spots in a mark of mutual respect (click here for PMA’s complete live report from the final table).
After 78 hands of heads-up play with just a single all-in and call, MAIN EVENT III came to a sudden end. The blinds were at 120,000/240,000 when Slewa shoved all-in over the top of Andrew Dales’ pre-flop raise to one million, with Dales making the call. It was Ac-5c for Dales against Ah-Qd for Slewa.
The flop was dealt 2h-7h-4c, with the 7c on the turn giving Dales plenty of outs. The As wasn’t one of them as Slewa erupted from his seat and the celebrations were underway.
Andrew Dales’ runner-up finish was the best for a South Australian in the MAIN EVENT, earning him a package of $65,000, which also includes seats in the 2014 Aussie Millions Main Event and MAIN EVENT IV.
NSW players Daniel Keast and Michael Ho placed third and fourth respectively while Jonathan Bredin, a wheelchair bound youngster from Victoria earned a package worth $25,000 for fifth. Jono had two assistants handling the hole card and betting duties for him throughout the tournament, but the decisions were all his and he quickly earned the respect of players and spectators in this deep run.
The other result of note was the sixth-place finish of Connie Diakovasilis, who surpassed the performance of husband Con who was eighth in MAIN EVENT III.
On behalf of PokerMedia Australia, we’d like to congratulate the Full Group on another highly successful MAIN EVENT and thank the team for the support and assistance through the tournament. Bring on MAIN EVENT IV!
