The poker year is off and running with the second major series for 2013 – the Poker Zone Cup – kicking off tonight (Tuesday) at Adelaide Casino.
Since 2009, Adelaide Casino has traditionally hosted the first major tournament after the Aussie Millions. In 2009-11, that was ANZPT Adelaide and, for the past two years, the Poker Zone Cup has occupied this spot on the calendar.
However, Adelaide’s poker pedigree stretches back to the late 1980s when the property hosted the first edition of the Australasian Poker Championships.
Held from 1987-2011, the honour roll includes Bob Crossman, Sam Korman, 2011 Aussie Millions Main Event champion David Gorr and Australian Poker Hall of Fame foundation inductee Gary Benson.
Last year, Joseph Vinecombe captured the title and the first prize of just over $40,000. Interestingly, Jarrod Glennon, who placed fifth in last week’s Aussie Millions Main Event for $290,000, cashed eighth in the 2012 Poker Zone Cup Main Event.
Tonight and tomorrow, satellites for the Main Event are scheduled before the opening tournament on Thursday, the $235 buy-in Teams Event. Week one wraps up with a rare Pot Limit Omaha rebuy event, for just a $30 buy-in, $30 rebuys and a $50 add-on.
Week two kicks-off next Tuesday (February 12) with the $235 No Limit Hold’em Terminator before an Adelaide Casino favourite; the $450 No Limit Hold’em Triple Chance.
The $1100 buy-in 2013 Poker Zone Cup Main Event will be held over two days (February 14-15). Players will start with 30,000 in chips, while levels are 30 minutes in duration throughout the tournament. On behalf of the PMA team, all the best to the Adelaide Casino team and players participating in this series!
