On a weekend where most of the eyes of the poker nation were on Crown Melbourne and the 2013 Aussie Millions, a young Sydneysider was carving out a slice of poker history of his own at the Parramatta Leagues Club.
Sum Trinh (pictured left) became the first player in National Poker League history to win back-to-back Quarterly Finals, adding a $42,000 package of cash and prizes to the $40,000-plus package he claimed back in October.
He is also the first player to win more than one NPL major event and, incredibly, did so with the same winning hand as his previous victory – A-7!
Sum picked up $40,000 in cash along with a $2000 ticket for the first NPL Million, which will be played at The Star later this year. Sum had already earned a seat to the NPL Million after winning a ticket at the last Sydney Monthly Final.
Sum defeated Bestani Ay of the Harbord/Manly region heads-up, with the second-place man taking home $19,000 in cash along with an NPL Million ticket of his own.
The others to take home NPL Million tickets were Michael Cawthorn (Marrickville, plus $10,800 in cash), Nick Williams (Marrickville, $6500), Carl Falloon (Marrickville, $4800) and Ganzo Narn (Queanbeyan, $3500). Tien Quach (Marrickville, $4000), Aaron Suffield (Griffith, $2600 and Tim Kaufusi (Bathurst, $2300) filled out the top nine placings.
Congratulations also to George Apokis and Alexander Buxton who took down the two NPL Million Satellites run on Saturday & Sunday, both securing their seats in what promises to be Sydney’s biggest poker event of the year.
This was the eighth NPL Quarterly Final and marks two full years of NPL Quarterly Finals where almost $1.2 million in cash and prizes have been given away.
