Aussie Millions daily report – January 21, 2013
The final table has been set for the first event on the 2013 Aussie Millions schedule with 2011 EPT San Remo champion Rupert Elder holding a big chip lead.
Day two of the $1100 buy-in Opening Event started with 144 players chasing 110 spot in the money – a minimum payout of $2500 with a first prize of $250,000 waiting up top.
The bubble quickly burst and, by the time the field had been slashed to 27 at the dinner break, it was Adelaide’s James Bills holding the chip lead with about 1.3 million in chips.
However, Bills would be denied a spot at the final table by the eventual chip leader Elder when they clashed aces and kings late in the evening, leaving Bills sidelined in 11th.
The final table line-up comprises Elder (3,412,000), WA’s Ashley Warner (1,884,000), defending Opening Event champion Brendon Rubie (1,524,000), 2011 EPT Prague winner Martin Finger of Germany (1,450,000), Phillip Libeau (1,408,000), local Dusan Stoevski, who was chasing his first Aussie Millions cash since placing 32nd in the 2008 Main Event (916,000), Marwan Nassif (849,000), WA’s Ted Nguyen (681,000), Nali Kaselias (668,000) and Fabian Craib (616,000).
The list of players who cashed also included Tony Kondevski (12th), 2011 Sydney Champs winner Errolyn Strang (29th), overall day one chip leader Michael Guzzardi 35th), Bruno Portaro (37th), Amanda De Cesare (53rd), Dale Marsland (58th), Tom Grigg (72nd), Sam Korman (106th) and Melanie Weisner (107th). The final table starts at 2pm today.
• Sunday was always going to be a busy day for Joe Hachem (pictured), but we’re confident the 2005 WSOP champion slept well last night.
The Crown ambassador was, of course, front and centre for the start of the sixth annual Hachem/Warne Charity Poker Tournament.
But, not realising that day two of the Opening Event was also scheduled yesterday, Hachem spent much of the day bounding back and forth between the Aussie Millions HQ area in the West End to the Crown Poker Room in pursuit of his first Aussie Millions Championship Ring.
It was a successful day on both counts for Hachem. The charity event raised $320,000 for The Shane Warne Foundation, with Mike Turley defeating Keith Walker for the title.
The winner earned 2013 Aussie Millions Main Event and WSOP APAC Main Event packages while Walker will take his place in the 2013 Aussie Millions Main Event.
However, Hachem fell short of his ultimate goal in the Opening Event after his pocket jacks fell to the trip nines of Elder, leaving him sidelined in 14th.
2006 Aussie Millions Main Event winner Lee “Final Table” Nelson holds the records for the number of Aussie Millions final table finishes (11) and number of Aussie Millions titles won (four).
