AM TODAY: Jan 20; Records tumble as Ahmed leads field into day 2

Aussie Millions daily report – January 20, 2013

It was a record-breaking day in the Crown Poker Room with a massive field of 677 players adding a further $1100 apiece to the prizepool for the Opening Event of the 2013 Aussie Millions.

The tally of 708 unique players across the three day one flights would have represented a more than respectable start to the series, but the repechage format of this event bolstered the number of buy-ins to a massive 1338.

The winners will be assured the biggest slice of the $1.338 million prizepool, with a payout of $250,000 to go with the first championship ring of the 2013 Aussie Millions.

Incredibly, just 71 of the 677 day 1C starters survived the session, and it was Iqbal Ahmed who snared the outright lead with a huge stack of 356,000. They’ll join the 73 who bagged their chips on days 1A and 1B, meaning the 144 day two players are just 34 spots away from the money.

Behind Ahmed, the top five comprises Michael Guzzardi (252,600, pictured), Shannon Vandenberg (223,700), Ryan Smith (217,500) and 2008 Aussie Millions Bounty event champion Marlon Goonawardana (215,900).

The list of contenders also features Bruno Portaro, Joe Hachem (who will be hosting his charity event with Shane Warne from 2pm today), Dale Marsland, Tom Grigg, Gary Benson, Bill Jordanou, Amanda De Cesare, Brendon Rubie, Sam Korman and 2011 Aussie Millions Main Event winner David Gorr.

A smattering of internationals have also made a successful start to their Aussie Millions campaigns, including Harry Demetriou, Melanie Weisner and Elliot Smith. Play kicks-off on day two at 12.30pm today.
