Racegoers packed Flemington in their 10s of thousands yesterday for the Victoria Derby while for an equally committed group of punters, the focus was the Crown Poker Room for the third running of the Shane Warne Super Stack event.
Although the total field was almost half that who took to the felt for the first edition of this tournament 12 months ago (332, down from 606) the numbers were slightly up from the 265 who participated in SWSS II earlier this year.
A total of 78 players will be back at Crown today in pursuit of a piece of the $85,000-plus prizepool, which will be shared among the top 30 players, and a nice first prize of more than $21,000.
A smattering of well known names are spread through the chip count, which is mostly comprised of players chasing the biggest payout of their tournament playing days.
Tim Clarkson heads the chip count heading into day two on 401,000 with others in contention including past Aussie Million Main Event final table participants Peter Mobbs (126,500) and Antonio Casale (98,000), defending champion Monica Huynh (116,500), Dennis Huntly (107,000), Jim Sachinidis (87,000) and Antonio Fazzolari (80,000). Play resumes at 12.30pm today.
