APPT MELBOURNE: UK’s Sam Razavi celebrates second big result at Crown

Several prominent local players had their eyes firmly set on the APPT Melbourne title when play kicked off at the final table yesterday, but it was the UK’s Sam Razavi (pictured above) who was the toast of Crown after picking up the win and first prize of $326,125.

Razavi had a taste of the big-time at Crown Melbourne last year when he finished sixth in the Aussie Millions Main Event for more than $225,000. Despite a long list of tournament cashes collected across the world, his two biggest results have come on Aussie soil.

Indeed, he was a doubtful starter due to an exhaustive travel schedule in the days leading up to the event. After taking part in the APT Asian Series event in Mauritius, Razavi found his flight to Australia overbooked until a seat became available at the last minute.

Razavi defeated Newcastle’s Keith Walker heads-up after just two hands. Starting with a 3:1 chip lead, Walker committed the last of his chips with pocket jacks and led to the flop against the Ks-10s of Razavi. Two spades on the flop and a third on the turn made Razavi’s flush.

It’s been a huge year for Walker – he won $25,000 cash and a $15,000 Aussie Millions package in the 888PL/APL MAIN EVENT at Crown in February and pocketed more than $200,000 as runner-up here.

Final table chip leader Tom Grigg was third while the man who led the field into days two and three, Englishman Wayne Bentley, was fourth.
