APPT MELBOURNE: Rubie runs hot on day 1A of Main Event

Brendon Rubie (pictured) was the only player to finish with more than 100,000 in chips, assuring him the lead after day 1A of the PokerStars APPT Melbourne/ANZPT Grand Final Main Event at Crown Melbourne last night.

The opening flight of the $5000 buy-in event attracted a field of 98 players including scores of the biggest names in regional poker.

Former ANZPT Sydney winner Michael Kanaan finished second in chips while reigning Star Poker Summer Series champion Andy Lee, Aussie Poker Hall of Famer Gary Benson and Tom Grigg finished inside the top 10.

Others who’ll be back for day two include Hai Chu, Julius Colman, Jay Kinkade, Tim English, Dale Marsland, Jarred Graham, Danny Chevalier and Billy Argyros.

One of the earlier departures was current ANZ Player of Year points leader Anthony Aston. This means there is a great opportunity for those chasing Anthony. As this is the Grand Final for the ANZPT, players are awarded 50 per cent more points than usual. There are more than 20 players who can conceivably win the title.

Other notable players who were unable to advance through today included Jackie Glazier, recent APPT Queenstown winner David Allan and 2012 Aussie Millions champion Oliver Speidel. Day 1B continues at Crown Melbourne today from 12.10pm with a $550 No Limit Hold’em w/ Bounties tournament kicking off at 2.10pm.
