NZ POKER: Prelims done – it’s time for the NZPC Main Event

After a week of preliminary events at Christchurch Casino, it’s time for the highlight of the 2012 New Zealand Poker Championships (NZPC) – the $1650 Main Event – at Christchurch Casino.

Kicking off tomorrow, the latest edition of the tournament that started way back in 1999 – an eternity in poker terms – will feature the best of New Zealand’s tournament pros along with a handful of Aussies who’ve made the trip to support the city is just getting back on its feet after two devastating earthquakes.

The 2012 NZPC kicked off with Deb Merito taking out the Women’s title before Shi Lu Liu won the NLHE Turbo event and the first prize of $8000.  Dan Lai pipped Roy Gourley for the prestigious Minh Tran Memorial Two-card Manila title, but Gourley quickly avenged that result with victory in the NZ PLO Championship, celebrating a decade since his first NZPC cash.

In other results, Akash Mazumdar won the NLHE Repechage title before Jacko Tauwhare pocketed $13,000 as the Canterbury Championship victor. The $880 buy-in South Island Championship No Limit Hold’em event was played today. Good luck to players in the NZPC Main Event, and we’ll have a full wrap-up of the tournament on Monday.
