In yet another first in the history of Deaf Poker Australia, a three-tournament “stand-alone” series for the 2012 DPA Championship (DPAC), to be held at the Treasury Casino and Hotel in Brisbane this October, has been finalised.
In addition to the DPA Championship Main Event on Saturday, October 13, two side events have been added – a No Limit Hold’em Teams Event on Friday, October 12 and a Turbo No Limit Hold’em Event on Sunday, October 14.
And while entry into the Main Event remains exclusive to Deaf, Hard-of-Hearing (HOH) and Hearing Impaired (HI) players, the side events are open to both deaf and hearing players, which will prove a positive step in bridging the gap between the Deaf and hearing communities.
“We are so excited to introduce side events to DPAC in order to provide an opportunity for our players to compete against the mainstream in a major tournament setting,” DPA President Sokong Kim said.
“We are hopeful that this will result in increased player numbers, but we’re confident that the side events will raise DPA’s profile in the poker industry.”
But perhaps the biggest story developing in this year’s series is the first-ever Kiwi invasion. Up to eight players from New Zealand have already registered for this year’s Main Event, with more lining up to take the trip across the Tasman in the hope of becoming the first-ever international DPAC Champion.
“We have been in close contact with the New Zealand Deaf community, helping them establish organised poker competition in Auckland this year,” Kim said.
“I’m looking forward to seeing them take part in DPAC for the first time, but I’m really excited about catching up with everyone to share in the big pots and bad beat stories. There’s nothing like having a good yarn!”

About Deaf Poker Australia: Established in 2008, Deaf Poker Australia (DPA) is a non-profit organisation that aims to promote and develop poker within the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community around Australia. Similar organisations have been established throughout North America and Europe, providing poker tournaments to Deaf/HI/HOH players and catering to the ever-growing popularity of poker throughout the world. The unique feature of all these tournaments is the ability for players to use Auslan (Australian Sign Language), as well as English, at the tables. The DPA is continuing to look for support in order to develop their events and activities within the Australian Deaf community.
