WSOP TODAY: July 14; Gibson & Balkin lead Aussie charge with 97 remaining

Highlights from day 49 of the 2012 WSOP (July 14)

We started day five of the 2012 WSOP Main Event with two Aussies still standing and by day’s end, Lawrie Gibson and David Balkin were still in the hunt to join Joe Hachem in one of poker’s most select clubs.

With 97 players remaining, Gibson, who hails from Perth, WA, is 34th overall in chips with 2.21 million while Sydneysider Balkin recovered late in the day to finish 63rd overall with 1.295 million in chips. The average stack is just over 2.16 million, with Kyle Keranen (pictured left, with thanks to wsop.com) leading the field on 6,935,000.

Day five started with 282 players taking their seats, while 76-year-old Perry Green (a three-time WSOP gold bracelet winner) delivered the order to shuffle up and deal. He is best remembered as the runner-up to the late great Stu Ungar in the 1981 WSOP Main Event.

Iconic poker media figure Nolan Dalla took this bent on reaching the top 100 in the Main Event: “If a player plays the WSOP Main Event Championship every single year of eligibility (age 21 to death), that means the player will theoretically make it into the top 100 players just once. That’s right – just once.

"Consider that if 6000 players enter the championship each and every year, there is a 1 in 60 chance of making the top 100 players. If a player were to play for 60 straight years, then he or she would only make the top 100 once! So, each of the remaining players is truly experiencing the thrill of a lifetime.”

Among the other players still in contention are Gaelle Baumann (chip leader after day two and the top-ranked female player – currently eighth in chips), former November Niner Eric Buchman (39th), 2012 gold bracelet winner David “ODB” Baker (40th), dual gold bracelet winner Vanessa Selbst (69th), former November Niner Sam Holden (86th) and former gold bracelet winner Gavin Smith (91st).

Notable players eliminated during day five included Marcel Luske (102nd), actor Kevin Pollak (134th), Sorel Mizzi (151st), Daniel Negreanu (160th), Dan Shak (167th), Freddy Deeb (211th), An Tran (218th) and John Juanda (237th).
