WSOP TODAY: July 11; Weiss leads Aussie charge into day 3 of the Main Event

Highlights from day 46 of the 2012 WSOP (July 11)

It was a tough day for the Australians returning to the felt from day 1C to contest day 2C of the 2012 WSOP Main Event. Just eight of the estimated 35 Aussies who took their seats for the start of play will be back for day three.

Canberra youngster Michael Weiss, David Balkin, Shane Warne, Bruno Portaro, Robert Spano, Kel Beattie, Steve Lindebland and Paul Birman will join Aaron Lim, John Apostolidis, Jackie Glazier, Cameron McNeill, Mel Judah, Joseph Caruso, Daniel Attard, Jason Pritchard, Matthew Russell, Greg Kahl and Paul Spiteri in pursuit of one of 666 places in the money.

A total of 2300 players took their seats, with 911 securing a berth in day three along with the 842 players who survived day 2A-B. The 2012 WSOP Main Event features the fifth biggest field ever, behind 2006 (8773 players), 2010 (7319), 2011 (6865) and 2008 (6844).

Past WSOP Main Event winner who will return for day three are Johnny Chan (220,000), Dan Harrington (138,500), Huck Seed (70,600), Robert Varkonyi (104,800), Jerry Yang (149,000), Peter Eastgate (144,500) and reigning champion Pius Heinz (39,300).

Michael Hack led the day 2C field on 457,000, ahead of Marco Bognanni (452,100) but three other players from day 2A-B hold bigger stacks – Frenchwoman Gaelle Baumann (505,800) Mark Demirdjian (499,900) and Shaun Deeb (460,900).

The list of day 2C casualties included Phil Ivey, Jeff Madsen, Prahlad Friedman, Jennifer Harman, Michael Mizrachi, Jamie Gold, Joe Cada, Doyle Brunson, Gus Hansen, Viktor Blom and Tom McEvoy.
