WSOP TODAY: July 10; Frenchwoman leads, 10 Aussies through to day 3

Highlights from day 45 of the 2012 WSOP (July 10)

It’s been a successful WSOP for female players with victories for Allyn Jaffrey Shulman and Vanessa Selbst – and, of course, Australia’s Jackie Glazier runner-up finish in Event #41 ($3000 No Limit Hold’em).

The spotlight has now shifted to Gaelle Baumann of France (pictured left, with thanks to wsop.com) after she topped the chip count with 505,800 in the combined running of day 2A and 2B in the 2012 WSOP Main Event. Day 1A players were confined to the Amazon Room while the day 1B field was spread throughout the Brasilia and Pavilion Rooms.

In the 43-year-history of the World Series of Poker, a woman has appeared at the championship final table only once. Poker Hall of Famer Barbara Enright, who finished fifth in the 1995 Main Event Championship, still stands at the only woman in history to take a seat at poker’s most famed table.

Other notables to feature prominently included Shaun Deeb (460,900), Vanessa Selbst (350,400), Jason Somerville (332,700) and Daniel Negreanu (277,200). Five former WSOP Main Event champions will also return for day three – Pius Heinz, Peter Eastgate, Jerry Yang, Robert Varkonyi and Dan Harrington.

Others who’ll be back include Eugene Katchalov, Gavin Smith, Liv Boeree, Mike McDonald, Sammy Farha, Brock Parker, David Pham, Gabe Kaplan, actor Kevin Pollak (playing his first WSOP Main Event), Brian Hastings, Eric Baldwin and Faraz Jaka.

A total of 10 Australians prevailed with Aaron Lim leading the way on 181,800 after starting the day with just 16.000 in chips. Those who bowed out included Didier Guerin, Tom Rafferty, Grant Levy, David Steicke, Ngoc Nguyen, John Corr, Adam Hudson, Jeff Lisandro, Ben O’Connell, Kent Hunter, Oliver Speidel, Faramarz Delnawaz and Scott Brown.

And a special mention to Cameron McNeill, who is the last man standing of the 2012 TeamWSOP contingent from the Australian Poker League. He’s solidly placed with 141,300 and eager to surpass the achievement of fellow APL player Charlie Elias, who finished 53rd in the 2009 WSOP Main Event.
