PERTH POKER CHAMPS: Carlsson earns slice of WA poker history

The inaugural edition of the Perth Poker Championships wrapped up yesterday with Mat Carlsson’s victory in the Main Event, earning him a first prize of almost AUD $80,000.

One of five locals at the final table, the 22-year-old started the final table in second chip position but the stacks were spread quite evenly among:

Seat 1: Paul Satzke 438,000
Seat 2: Mat Carlsson 846,000
Seat 3: John Shin 660,000
Seat 4: David Lloyd 624,000
Seat 5: Anthony Marenko 476,000
Seat 6: Anthony Aston 320,000
Seat 7: Lucas Mierzwa 326,000
Seat 8: Didier Guerin 754,000
Seat 9: Jon Curtis 1,039,000

Carlsson (pictured left) chipped up midway through the final table when he found pocket aces to KO Guerin and pocket kings that spelt the end for David Lloyd. Overnight chip leader Curtis hit the rail in fourth before Aston bowed in third – the same result he achieved in the recent ANZPT Sydney Main Event.

The heads-up battle started with Anthony Marenko holding a slight lead over Carlsson and the pair swapped the top spot back and forth until Carlsson took a big chip lead when his flopped two-pair, queens and threes, won a big pot against Marenko’s pair of queens. He secured the title when his pocket sevens held up against the K-2 of Marenko.

• After placing runner-up in the High Stakes event at last year’s ANZPT Perth, Bernard Beh went one better to claim the Perth Poker Champs High Roller title and the first prize of $48,000. Derrick Cheung was second ($27,000) ahead of Kent Hunter ($18,900) and Irene Holzmann ($12,500).

In the extra $330 No Limit Hold’em event added to the schedule, John Aufdemkampe claimed his second title of the series (for $5100) ahead of Luke Sharpe, Alex Marbeck and James Fisher.
