ANZPT SYDNEY: Heather on a high heading into Main Event finale

After a marathon 10 hours of play, the field for the 2012 ANZPT Sydney Main Event has been reduced to 27 after 207 players had taken to the Star Poker felt at the start of day two.

It was a day of high drama with plenty of ups and downs along the way and some familiar faces finishing amongst the chip leaders.

They include 2012 Aussie Millions winner Oliver Speidel who is on track to make it two majors in two months after going on a tear midway through the afternoon’s proceedings. He sits down today with 797,000 – good for second overall.

Also in contention are Liam O’Rourke, Alec Smith, 2008 APPT Grand Final winner Martin Rowe, Gordon Huntly, Mishel Anunu, Sam Capra and Peco Stojanovski who all endured somewhat of a rollercoaster but progressed in the end.

However, they all have some work to do to catch chip leader Nick Heather (pictured left) who stormed home in the final two hours to build a stack of almost one million in chips. The key hand for him was an all-in pre-flop confrontation against Zhi Yao in which his jacks survived a race against Yao’s A-K.

Among the day two casualties to fall short of the money were Lee Nelson, Gary Benson, Maria Ho, Dan Kelly, Tony Hachem, Peter Aristidou, Michael Kanaan, Leo Boxell and Mel Judah. The list of those who departed in the money included 2011 Star Poker Summer Series Main Event winner Andy Lee (30th), Didier Guerin (33rd), Suzy Khoueis (38th), Nabil Edgtton (42nd), Tony Kondevski (46th), Michael O’Grady (48th) and Dean McIver (53rd).
