WPPT: Hopes high for improved showing at Jupiters

After an inauspicious launch in India, the World Professional Poker Tour (WPPT) team are hoping for a stronger turnout when WPPT Gold Coast kicks off tomorrow (Wednesday) at Jupiters Hotel and Casino in Broadbeach, Queensland.

WPPT CEO and president Serge Mazza acknowledged that the opening event of the WPPT schedule fell well short of expectations due to the clash with an event in Macau and an India Poker Championship event the following week.

Despite reducing the buy-in from INR 100,000 (approximately AUD $2000) to INR 50,000, WPT Goa at Casino Carnival drew just 12 players with Andrew Ling etching his name as the first WPPT champion, winning a modest INR 340,000 (just under AUD $6400).

“We’re very excited about brining the WPPT to Australia for our ‘home event’. We already have more than 40 players registered and a big Last Chance Satellite tonight at Jupiters,” Mazza said.

Jupiters poker manager Martin Coughlan was also excited to welcome the WPPT to the Gold Coast: “The WPPT satellites at Jupiters have been very successful and it’s been great to see the local players supporting this event. We would like to see a prize pool of more than $300,000 for this first event and then build on it,” Coughlan said.

WPPT events offer one of the best structures in major tournament poker. Players start with 50,000 in tournament chips. Each level is 60 minutes. Play will be approximately 8-9 levels on days 1, 2 and 3 and will play to an overall winner on day 4. Play may begin 10-handed on days 1 and 2, will be balanced at the discretion of the tournament director and move to nine-handed as soon as possible and remain nine-handed for the remainder of the tournament.

Play kicks-off at 11am tomorrow for the first of two day one flights. PMA will be providing daily updates on all the action from Jupiters Hotel and Casino on the Gold Coast.
