Brendon Rubie’s standing as one of Australia’s premier poker players has again been underlined with his victory in the 2012 Aussie Millions $1100 No Limit Hold’em Opening Event.
After collecting his first major live title 18 months earlier in the 2010 Melbourne Poker Champs Main Event, Rubie celebrated his first Aussie Millions title after typically tough scrap against final table chip leader Scott Wilson.
Although the total of Opening Event entries dipped below 1000 for the first time since 2009, players were still battling for a slice of a $946,000 prizepool and a $200,000 first prize. Wilson started the final day in the box seat:
Scott Wilson 2,628,000
Brendon Rubie 1,625,000
Rob Angood 1,384,000
Tam Truong 934,000
Naz Sibaei 849,000
Sherif Derias 696,000
Manny Stavropoulos 554,000
John Thomson 363,000
Sean Robey 262,000
Tamara Volkoff 191,000
Rubie and Wilson were the last two standing, with the former holding a 2:1 chip lead. Chips were pushed back and forth for almost two hours until a massive hand in which Rubie’s Qd-8d found two-pair on a board of 8h-2d-7d-Qs-Ac.
Such was the scale of betting that Rubie thought it was all over, but Wilson was left with a handful of chips. After a couple of double-ups, Wilson’s final stand came on a flop of 10s-4d-Qs holding 4c-3c, but Rubie showed Qc-Jd for top pair. The turn and river blanked, and for the second year in-a-row, the title was claimed by a young New South Welshman.
