AUSSIE MILLIONS: Pedley carves out a slice of Aussie poker history

It’s tough enough to win an Aussie Millions title, let alone the same event on multiple occasions. But that’s just what Michael Pedley achieved for the second time in five years when he captured the 2012 Aussie Millions $1100 No Limit Hold’em w/ Rebuys title.

In an all-Aussie heads-up battle, Pedley defeated Jonathan Karamalikis. It was the second time the South Australian has finished runner-up in this event after placing second to Mark Kassis in 2009. Canada’s Mike Watson, who won this event in 2010, was fifth while Andrew Scarf was ninth for the second successive year.

Despite the global trend, there is clearly still an appetite for rebuy events as evidenced by the increased number of players on 2011’s event and the massive 331 rebuys piled into the prizepool.

The final table was loaded – aside from Pedley, Karamalikis, Watson and Scarf, there was Dan djk123 Kelly chasing his second Aussie Millions title of the series, online standout Jim Mr_BigQueso Collopy, 2010 Aussie Millions Main Event winner Tyron Krost and German pro Marvin Rettenmaier, who held the chip lead at the final table:

Marvin Rettenmaier 113,700
Mike Watson 102,600
Jonathan Karamalikis 101,100
Michael Pedley 77,800
Jim Collopy 46,400
Michael Benvenuti 44,500
Tyron Krost 42,200
Dan Kelly 40,200
Tony Sama 39,300
Andrew Scarf 28,100

Kelly managed to steer his way into the last three against Pedley and Karamalikis and, as reported on www.aussiemillions.com, "the three-handed battle was intense as chips bounced back and forth between all the players – Kelly was the next to fall when he moved all-in pre-flop with Qh-9h and was called by Pedley’s Ah-5h. The board ran out 8h-Js-8c-7c-Kd and that was all she wrote for Kelly."

Pedley and Karamalikis started almost even in chips but it was a relatively short heads-up duel that ended when Pedley, holding Kd-Jh called Karamalikis’ all-in. His Ks-Tc started and stayed behind the board of 4d-2d-4h-3s-Jc and the victory belonged to the WA ex-pat now based in Victoria.
