AUSSIE MILLIONS: Rubie looms as big threat at Opening Event final table

The final table has been decided for the first Aussie Millions title of the 2012 championship series with Scott Wilson holding a significant chip lead after a dramatic end to day two.

However, all eyes will be on one of the most successful online players in Australian history and the winner of the 2010 Melbourne Champs Main Event title in this very poker room – Brendon Rubie (pictured left).

His only Aussie Millions cash to date came in this event two years ago, when he placed 65th. Despite trailling Wilson by more than one million in chips, he is the popular pick to pocket the first championships ring for 2012.

But it won’t be all one-way traffic for the top two, with some seasoned players still in the hunt for the title including UK duo Rob Angood and John Thomson, former champion bodybuilder Sherif Derias, Crown regular Manny Stavropoulos (celebrating his sixth Aussie Millions cash and third Aussie Millions final table) and one of Australia’s premier female tournament players Tamara Volkoff.

The list of notable players who cashed included Andrew Capelin (14th), Tino Lechich (17th), Jackie Glazier (18th), Aussie Hold’em Poker player Rhys Gregson (19th), Sam Youssef (21st), Jimmy Siu (24th), Martin Comer (25th), Octavian Voegele (28th), John Dalessandri (29th), Kenna James (31st), Jie Gao (33rd), Billy Jordanou (38th), Grant Levy (41st), Mike Comer (48th), Joel Dodds (52nd), Mark Rubinstein (63rd), Jim Sachinidis (70th), Jay Kinkade (72nd), Matt Wakeman (74th), Ali Ghezelbash (77th) and Matthew Pearson (80th).

Tournament officials took the decision to halt play late last night rather than play through the night to decide the champion. Today’s final table kicks-off at 12.10pm, and blinds start at 15,000/30,000.
