Andrew and Helen Davis have been regulars at major tournaments around the country for years, and it was a great deal of sadness that our poker community learned of Helen’s passing last year. So regulars in the Star Poker Room were thrilled to see Andrew grinning from ear-to-ear after his victory in the Star Poker Summer Series $1100 Sydney Special No Limit Hold’em event.
That win marked an amazing start to the series for the retired Sydneysider, who’d placed 11th and fifth in the opening two events. Incredibly, he started the final table as the outright short stack, holding just 59,000 or less than five per cent of the chips in play.
Sam Khouiss was the first casualty from the final table, followed soon after by Paul Elliott – after a big pre-flop raising war, Elliott’s pocket aces were cracked by Martin Rowe’s 9-6 which made two-pair after the turn.
Roni Makeem fell in eighth (K-J against the A-J of Alec Smith), then overnight chip leader Ali Ghezelbash tumbled in seventh after losing successive big pots to Smith and Davis.
Todor Kondevski and Mark Griffiths managed to nurse their short stacks to fifth and sixth respectively before another big pot featuring Rowe. The money went in after the flop of K-4-3 with Rowe showing K-J and Smith 4-3 for bottom two-pair. The board the ran out K-4, making a full house for both players but giving Rowe a bigger boat and a substantial chip lead.
However, Rowe drifted back to the field and made a final stand with 10-8 against the Q-J of Davis, and the jack-high board had Rowe heading for the cage to collect the money for third place.
Heads-up play started with Fred Alam and Andrew Davis holding fairly even stacks fairly evenly but just two hands later, Davis was confirmed as champion. Alam moved all-in for 750,000, Davis called, Alan showed A-8 while Davis held the lead with A-10. The board came 6-3-2-8 but before the roars of Alam’s cheer squad had subsided, the 10 sailed down the river to hand Davis a famous victory.
