STAR POKER: Student dishes out poker lesson to take out ladies title

Star Poker’s December tournament series is renowned as the home of Australia’s biggest buy-in ladies event, and that tradition continued at this year’s Star Poker Summer Series with a $400 buy-in event for our premier female players.

But it was a relative newcomer, student Julia Alqahtani, who stamped herself as player to watch after dominating the talented field of 21 players to pocket almost $4000 as the 2011 Star Poker Summer Series Ladies champion.

The field included Sydney Champs Opening Event winner Kristina Jeney, multiple Star Poker ladies champion Catherine Owens, 2011 Star Poker ANZAC Day tournament victor Jane Howard and pub poker legend Suzy Khoueis, who placed in the top 25 of the first APPT Sydney Main Event back in 2007.

But it was Alqahtani who set the early pace and, along with Carolyn Kohlman, then tore a swathe through the final table. Kohlman eliminated Shelley McLean in fourth before Susan Bunt bowed out in third to claim the first of the spots in the money.

Alqahtani started the heads-up showdown with a 3:1 chip lead and the end came when she raised enough to put Kohlman all-in after a flop of Kc-7h-3h. Kohlman called and showed Qh-10h for a flush draw but she trailled Alqahtani’s Kd-9c for top pair. The board bricked out and the title belonged to Julia Alqahtani.
