It’s been an amazing year for local poker’s 60-somethings. In January, David Gorr pocketed $2 million as the 2011 Aussie Millions Main Event champion, just hours after Leo Boxell had captured the Aussie Millions Six-handed title.
Boxell would go on to win the APPT Melbourne Main Event in July. In January 2012, Boxell will be inducted into the Australian Poker Hall of Fame, where he’ll join Lee “Final Table” Nelson (pictured left), who emerged victorious from last night’s ANZPT Melbourne Main Event final table.
Nelson is without doubt the winningest tournament player in Australasian poker history, with a CV that includes the 2006 Aussie Millions Main Event and victories across the world. His record now includes victory on one of the two regional tours run by his former sponsor.
With the Brownlow Medal count ticking away in the background, Nelson flopped the nut flush in the final hand to confirm his win and the first prize of $156,550. Another vastly experienced campaigner Nick Georgoulas collected a career high tournament cash of almost $100,000 for finishing runner-up to Nelson.
Danny Chevalier (third) fell short of a second ANZPT title while Phillip Willcocks, who was among the more dominant players on the final table, ended where he started the day – fifth. The final ANZPT event is scheduled to be played at SKYCITY in Darwin on October 4-8.
