WCOOP: Aussies bag two titles in opening week

In the first non-Hold’em event of the series, bratpack1979 defeated Gakn29 from Canada heads-up to win the $320 Pot Limit Omaha title for a first prize of USD $83,518.08.

This event carried a guarantee of USD $300,000, which was easily surpassed when 1697 players registered to create a total prize pool of $509,100. After more than 15 hours at the tables, the end came when bratpack1979’s 10s-Qs-7h-9c improved to a flush on a board of 2d-5s-Js-10d-7s against the 9d-10h-Ad-Ah of Gakn29.

Just hours later, 1589 players gathered for the $215 No Limit Hold’em Turbo w/Rebuys, with the pool of $1,094,600 smashing the $500,000 guarantee.

Jonathan MONSTER_DONG Karamalikis (left) underlined his status as one of Australia’s premier players in taking down the first prize of $179,569.13 and his first WCOOP bracelet, in under five hours. Incredibly, the Australian pro had been down to less than one big blind at the final table, but still managed to claw back and win.

They become the sixth and seventh Australian players to win WCOOP events, after James Obst’s $215 Pot-Limit Omaha (one rebuy & one add-on) victory in 2008 and wins to kevinnok, ROMES_HOME, Money_1985 and acesup_4108 last year.
