NEWS: Sydney Championships kick-off huge month at Star

The 2011 Sydney Poker Championships will be the last major tournament series played at Star City before the exciting relaunch of the property in September. From next month, Star City will be known as The Star, while its poker brand will become Star Poker, replacing Big Game Poker. The $860 million redevelopment includes the re-orientation of the building to embrace Sydney Harbour and the city skyline. The new frontage will feature a dramatic floor to roof glass facade with rotating clear glass windows, wrapping around the streetscape.

With a 3000 square metre extension, the destination will include 20 restaurants, bars and cafes and a new retail collection set on an open promenade lining Sydney’s waterfront. The Star will open its doors to the public with a series of events and live entertainment through to the end of the year.

“We are incredibly excited to be able to unveil the new name and identity which completes the picture for our new hotel, casino, dining and nightlife destination,” Sid Vaikunta, Managing Director, The Star, said.

“We designed The Star to represent everything that Sydney stands for: good food, beautiful views and memorable experiences. It’s been a long progression to get to where we are today, but in a few months we will be revealing the new harbour-side entrance and our new offerings.”

The redevelopment of The Star commenced in November 2008 and has had more than 1200 full time construction workers employed for two and a half years working on the project.

Launching as part of the redevelopment is a new five-star lifestyle hotel, the Darling, which will offer 171 rooms and suites, a luxurious day spa and an outdoor pool with a deck, cabanas and bar. Built in addition to the existing hotel and suites, it will bring the total rooms at The Star to 650 across three towers.
