NEWS: Schreiner crowned king in Queenstown

The cool climate of New Zealand’s South Island seems to agree with European poker players who, for the third year in a row, have captured a major title in the Land of the Long White Cloud.

In 2009-10, Kiwi-based Dane Soren Eriksen went back-to-back for the NZ Poker Champs Main Event crown. Now German Marcel Schreiner has etched his name in NZ poker history by capturing the SKYCITY Snowfest title in Queenstown.

Schreiner bested a field of 127 players and prevailed after a marathon 12-hour final table and 190 hands of heads-up play to claim the first prize of NZD $94,300.

For much of the day, it seemed the trophy would be staying on home soil as Matty Yates entered day three with the second biggest stack and dominated the final table before finishing second, worth NZD $60,000.

Daniel Laidlaw was the best-placed Aussie in fifth, while it was back-to-back final tables for the Cohen brothers with Hugh placing eighth, 12 months after his brother Julian won this event. Jonathan Karamalikis went close to becoming the first player to win multiple APPT events, finishing ninth.

The next APPT Season 5 event takes place at the Grand Lisboa Hotel and Casino in Macau, from November 17-27. It will feature a schedule of 14 events culminating in the HKD $30,000 Main Event.
